WELDING ACADEMY - North West Regional College, Greystone Campus, Limavady 


Many of Northern Ireland’s engineering companies are currently experiencing growth and there is a real demand for skilled welders. The Welding Academy at North West Regional College will provide thirteen individuals with the skills and experience to take up welding roles with GES Ltd, Londonderry; MIM-NI Ltd, Maydown; MS Engineering, Limavady; Roe Engineering Ltd, Coleraine; McCauley Trailers Ltd, Toomebridge and Crossland Tankers Ltd, Maghera.

The Academy consists of a five week intensive training course, followed by a two week placement with one of the six participating companies. Academy participants who successfully complete the training will gain industry recognised qualifications and the opportunity to participate in an on-site work placement where they will receive further training and mentoring in a welding role.

Following satisfactory completion of the work placement, participants will then be interviewed for a permanent welding role within their placement company. Offers of employment will be conditional upon successful completion of the training, company placement, interview, and any further employment checks the participating company may make.

  • 5 weeks intensive training at North West Regional College, Greystone Campus, Limavady on 4th March 2019. 
  • Participants will be paid a £150 training allowance per week while in training. 
  • Participants will be paid travel expenses covering their return journey from their place of residence to the college while in training. 
  • Participants may be eligible for assistance with childcare costs while in training. 


 Work Placement 

  • 2 weeks further on-site training and mentoring with one of the six participating companies starting on Monday 8th April 2019.
  • Participants will be paid a £150 training allowance per week while on placement. 
  • Participants will be paid travel expenses covering their return journey from their place of residence to the participating company while on placement. 
  • Participants may be eligible for assistance with childcare costs while on placement. 


Participating Company Information 

Global Equipment Spares - GES Ltd 

GES is a leading supplier of Abrasive Wear Plate and Special Steels to the mining, construction, agriculture and recycling industries. Through its quest for excellence, GES is geared up to be the perfect partner to Original Equipment Manufacturers for all their abrasive wear plate and special steel needs. 

GES specialises in the profiling, milling, forming and fabrication of abrasive wear plate and screening products, all under its 75,000 ft² facility based on the outskirts of Londonderry. Our customer base boasts the majority of the leading OEMs in the crushing and screening sectors and we export to North America and Europe predominantly. We are accredited to ISO9001:2015 Quality, ISO3834-3 Welding and OSHAS18001 Health & Safety. 


Mechanical Installations and Maintenance (N.I) Ltd are engineering specialists in the installation, relocation and maintenance of industrial machinery; stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium and bespoke fabrications;  statutory inspections of all lifting equipment and plant as well as the packing and shipping of industrial machinery. 

We have a team of approximately 40 project managers, supervisors, mechanical fitters and riggers, CAD technicians, sheet metal/ steel fabricators, welders and apprentices capable of dealing with the requirements of any project. 

MS Engineering

MS Engineering is a small sized family orientated business established over 10 years ago in Limavady. MS Engineering have a team of skilled fabricator/ welders with over 20 years' experience and knowledge. Since setting up MS Engineering we have undertaken projects for multi-national companies and smaller local companies. MS Engineering have also taken on work in London and France for multi-national companies. 

MS Engineering can manufacture items ranging from small brackets to complex structures, 

Roe Engineering Ltd 

Roe Engineering Ltd is a small compact company situated near Coleraine in a rural area in County Londonderry established in 1998 and Limited Company formed in 2008 - provides metal and steel general fabrication together with welding services. CE Approved. 

McCauley Trailers Ltd 

Northern Ireland's longest established trailer manufacturer, McCauley Trailers are market leading manufacturers of high quality, cost effective Agricultural & Commercial Trailers, as well as suppliers of trailer parts for all trailers makes & models. 

With over 60 years' experience in trailer manufacturing, our in-house design team specialise in trailer customisation to suit individual requirements and work closely with customers to supply the exact products required. 

MAC Trailers is the brand name of McCauley Trailers Ltd, encompassing the company's agricultural, commercial and bodies range. Since establishing in 1955, McCauley Trailers Ltd has evolved from manufacturing livestock trailers, plant trailers and bespoke made to order trailers to producing one of the largest ranges of trailers available for commercial and agricultural vehicles. 

Today, McCauley Trailers Ltd has established itself as a specialist in trailer design and fabrication. The company has invested substantial resources in research, development and product innovation. Crossland Tankers Ltd has grown from a tanker repairs and servicing company into one of the leading road tanker manufacturers in the UK and Ireland.

We currently employ over 130 people across our two manufacturing sites in Swatragh and Burnley and have created a happy work environment where everyone is a valued team member. Many of our most experienced staff began their careers with an apprenticeship right here at Crossland.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years old 
  • All applicants must be currently eligible to work in the UK 



  • Complete the online application form by 12.00 noon on Friday 8th February 2019. 
  • If required, an information session and initial interview will be held at North West Regional College, Greystone Campus, 11 Greystone Road, Limavady week commencing Monday 11th February 2019. 
  • A dexterity test and final interview will be held at North West Regional College week commencing Monday 18th February 2019
  • Training will last 5 weeks, commencing on Monday 4th March 2019 at North West Regional College, Greystone Campus, 11 Greystone Road, Limavady.
  • Participants that complete the training will then be allocated an on-site work placement with one of the six companies named above. On-site work placements will last 2 weeks commencing on Monday 8th April 2019
  • Following satisfactory completion of their on-site work placement, participants will then be interviewed for a permanent welding role within their placement company.
