WELDING ACADEMY – Southern Regional College, Portadown

Introduction

Many of Northern Ireland’s engineering companies are currently experiencing growth and there is a real demand for skilled welders. The Welding Academy at Southern Regional College will provide ten individuals with the skills and experience to take up welding roles with Walter Watson and Annard Limited in the Castlewellan and Armagh areas.

The Academy consists of a five week intensive training course, followed by a two week placement with either Walter Watson Limited or Annard Limited. Academy participants who successfully complete the training will gain industry recognised qualifications and the opportunity to participate in an on-site work placement where they will receive further training and mentoring in a welding role.

Following satisfactory completion of the work placement, participants will then be interviewed for a permanent welding role within their placement company. Offers of employment will be conditional upon successful completion of the training, company placement, interview, and any further employment checks the participating company may make.

Training

  • 5 weeks intensive training at Southern Regional College, Portadown Campus starting on 18th February 2019.
  • Participants will be paid a £150 training allowance per week while in training.
  • Participants will be paid travel expenses covering their return journey from their place of residence to the college while in training.
  • Participants may be eligible for assistance with childcare costs while in training.

Work Placement

  • 2 weeks further on-site training and mentoring with either Walter Watson Ltd or Annard Ltd starting on Monday 25th March 2019.
  • Participants will be paid a £150 training allowance per week while on placement.
  • Participants will be paid travel expenses covering their return journey from their place of residence to the participating company while on placement.
  • Participants may be eligible for assistance with childcare costs while on placement.

Participating Company Information

Walter Watson Limited
The company was established in 1967 and has grown to become an industrial leader in the disciplines of structural steel, reinforcing steel, industrial crane installations and agricultural equipment manufacturing. The company operates from a 21 acre site in Castlewellan, which includes 30,500m2 of covered manufacturing and storage facilities with other satellite production facilities at its Dunmore plant and Auglisnafin Road Depots. The facilities have a high level of automation and infrastructure, however the need remains for a nucleus of local skilled operatives to utilise the facility to its optimum productivity. As a family owned business our emphasis is on employment longevity and job security.

Annard Limited
Annard Ltd was established in the late 1990s to refurbish Horse Lorries and then progressed into designing and manufacturing 7.5ton horse vehicles. The company then expanded into our current premises in 2005, with a purpose built spray shop, welding station and a fibre glass manufacturing area to ensure that each process was carried out at our factory. We have a team consisting of skilled individuals ranging from coachbuilders, welders, cabinet makers and commercial sprayers. This means the vehicle is finished to the highest of standards.
With a keen eye for detail, Annard started working on its flagship Allure Sport, this is our 3.5 tonne 2 horse vehicle that has been designed with substantial emphasis on the safety and design for the comfort of the driver and the horses. Annard’s team of research designers and experts have mainly focused on Carbon and glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) composites that are heavily used within the aviation, marine, renewables, automotive, agriculture, sports and recreation, military and construction markets.

Eligibility Criteria

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • All applicants must be currently eligible to work in the UK.

Instructions

  • Complete the online application form by 12.00 noon on Friday 25th January 2019.
  • If required, an information session and initial interview will be held at Southern Regional College, Portadown week commencing Monday 28th January 2019.
  • A dexterity test and final interview will be held at Southern Regional College week commencing Monday 4th February 2019.
  • Training will last 5 weeks, commencing on Monday 18th February 2019 at Southern Regional College, Portadown Campus, Lurgan Road, Portadown.
  • Participants that complete the training will then be allocated an on-site work placement with either Walter Watson Limited or Annard Limited. On-site work placements will last 2 weeks commencing on Monday 25th March 2019.
  • Following satisfactory completion of their on-site work placement , participants will then be interviewed for a permanent welding role within their placement company.
