Many of Northern Ireland’s engineering companies are currently experiencing growth and there is a real demand for skilled welders. The Welding Academy at Southern Regional College will provide ten individuals with the skills and experience to take up welding roles with Walter Watson and Annard Limited in the Castlewellan and Armagh areas.
The Academy consists of a five week intensive training course, followed by a two week placement with either Walter Watson Limited or Annard Limited. Academy participants who successfully complete the training will gain industry recognised qualifications and the opportunity to participate in an on-site work placement where they will receive further training and mentoring in a welding role.
Following satisfactory completion of the work placement, participants will then be interviewed for a permanent welding role within their placement company. Offers of employment will be conditional upon successful completion of the training, company placement, interview, and any further employment checks the participating company may make.
Walter Watson Limited
The company was established in 1967 and has grown to become an industrial leader in the disciplines of structural steel, reinforcing steel, industrial crane installations and agricultural equipment manufacturing. The company operates from a 21 acre site in Castlewellan, which includes 30,500m2 of covered manufacturing and storage facilities with other satellite production facilities at its Dunmore plant and Auglisnafin Road Depots. The facilities have a high level of automation and infrastructure, however the need remains for a nucleus of local skilled operatives to utilise the facility to its optimum productivity. As a family owned business our emphasis is on employment longevity and job security.
Annard Ltd was established in the late 1990s to refurbish Horse Lorries and then progressed into designing and manufacturing 7.5ton horse vehicles. The company then expanded into our current premises in 2005, with a purpose built spray shop, welding station and a fibre glass manufacturing area to ensure that each process was carried out at our factory. We have a team consisting of skilled individuals ranging from coachbuilders, welders, cabinet makers and commercial sprayers. This means the vehicle is finished to the highest of standards.
With a keen eye for detail, Annard started working on its flagship Allure Sport, this is our 3.5 tonne 2 horse vehicle that has been designed with substantial emphasis on the safety and design for the comfort of the driver and the horses. Annard’s team of research designers and experts have mainly focused on Carbon and glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) composites that are heavily used within the aviation, marine, renewables, automotive, agriculture, sports and recreation, military and construction markets.
